NIGHT diving in the riviera maya, mexico

There is always some extra mystery and adventure to a night dive.

As the sun sets, you don your dive gear, slip on your mask and bite down on your regulator. A deep breath and you step off the boat – into the underwater night. Although you’ve seen this reef many times before, this time you drop into a whole new world and watch it come to life under the glow of your dive light.

Night diving offers a whole news set of challenges and enjoyments – a familiar, off-dived site becomes mysterious and alluring. Daytime creatures have vanished and a new range of fascinating and colorful life abounds. At night the reef quite literally comes alive: the coral polyps emerge to feed. All divers know that coral is alive, but when diving a reef during the day, it is difficult for us to conceive that something that resembles rock and stone so much can possibly be a living creature – diving at night, it becomes obvious. One your eyes have become accustomed to the dark you will see the phosphorescence glowing around you. What are you waiting for?
